“Lucid-izing” your technical document includes ALL of the following:

Substantive editing

  • Confirming that all relevant sections are included, are in the best order, and that each contains the appropriate text
  • Suggesting text changes so that it’s lucid, succinct, readable, and relevant to the target audience
  • Suggesting improvements in table/figure design and data presentation; creating tables
  • Confirming document consistency across sections, including tables and figures


  • Correcting errors in grammar, punctuation, spelling, and usage
  • Aligning text with a particular style guide (for example, AMA Style Guide)
  • Reviewing headings, headers and footers, page numbers, table of contents, figure/table numbering, acronyms
  • Checking text references to sections, figures, tables, and reference citations
  • Verifying references against PubMed or other sources


  • Formatting all text, tables, and references for consistency within the document and with any journal requirements
